Kolkata

Kolkata, officially known by its British name of Calcutta until 2001, has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last decade. No longer identified with slums, destitution, and the inspiring work of Mother Teresa, Kolkata has grown into the cultural capital of India. It's a vibrant yet intimate city, full of captivating soul. In addition, Kolkata is only city in India to have a tram car network, which adds to its old-world charm.

In terms of the city's cultural life, Kolkata's Bengalis exude a pride in their artistic heritage and like to see themselves as the intelligentsia of India. The city is home to a multitude of galleries and huge Indian classical music festivals, with a thriving Bengali-language theatre scene and a cinematic tradition.

Kolkata's climate

It is very much influence by the sea, Bay of Bengal. The annual mean temperature is about 27oC; monthly mean temperatures ranges from 19oC to 30oC. Kolkata is dominated by 3 seasons namely-summer, monsoon and winter. The summer is hot and humid with mean temperatures about 30oC but during dry spells the maximum temperatures often exceeds 40oC during April-May with a frequent break by severe thunderstorm/thunder squall during afternoon/evening hours resulting relief from the humid heat.

Monsoon arrives in the first week of June and stay up to first week of October. The two months October and November of post monsoon season is the transition period between monsoon and winter. During this time days are clear and night is comfortable.

Winter is the most pleasant time in Kolkata. Effective winter tends to last for only about two and a half months, with seasonal lows dipping to 12oC between December and January. Early morning mists are common in winter.

Enjoy the sun, the monsoon as well as the spring while you are on a trip to the city of Joy!
